Where do you want to teach English?
TEFL Country Guides
Our TEFL country guides for teaching English abroad will keep you up to date with the latest information about the most popular countries for our teacher travelers.
Each guide will review where the country is, why it is a popular destination and a short overview of the regional weather. We'll also provide a brief summary about the culture and what to see and do while there.
Then we'll get down to business and give you and idea of the cost of living and put that against the typical wages and contracts that teachers will receive in that country. We know that wages don't mean much unless seen in the light additional benefits such as employer-provided accommodation, amount of paid time off, how much your wages are taxed and the local the cost of living. A high wage in some countries might mean barely breaking even versus a modest wage in a county like South Korea might mean saving US$10-15,000 a year.
We'll also try to give you a sense of typical hiring packages and what they mean to your bottom line. Some jobs in cities like Shanghai will pay a huge wage, but accommodation will be so expensive that you might struggle to make ends meet. Other jobs might pay a lower wage but cover most of your living expenses including accommodation and even utilities and medical insurance. Then you can really start saving.
Even that information in a TEFL country guide will need to be supplemented by typical working hours and schedules. While these things can vary widely, we'll try to give you a good heads up.
We'll also let you know the basics about obtaining legal working papers in that country. Work visas vary a lot between countries and sometimes even within a country. In some countries they are critical and not always easy to get and in others, no one pays much attention to them. Most typical is something in the middle though.
Finally, we'll give you some local information about interviews and what schools are usually looking for from their applicants including educational requirements and if you need a TEFL certification.
Our TEFL country guides are designed to give you the basics and you will see that we often have an additional page or two to help you know more about the country - and when we can find a preferred recruiter who will help you along the way, we will give you the details on that as well.
Good luck and start building that list of where you want to go and what you want to see!
