Teach English in Costa Rica
Long one of the most popular expat destinations in Central America, those who want to teach English in Costa Rica will find a strong demand for teachers and flexible requirements.
Formalities
Similar to most other countries in the region Costa Rica is difficult when it comes to obtaining legal working papers and most teachers work on a 90 tourist visa that will require you to leave the country for 72 hours before returning for another 90 days.
Teaching Jobs
Demand for English teachers in Costa Rica is strong particularly in the Central Valley where tech, industry and call centers create a demand for business English.
As with most of Latin America, business English is a major driver of the TEFL industry and particularly if you are seeking work where there is a lot of competition (capital cities, especially), you should consider a certification in teaching business English before you arrive.
Business English classes, of course, tend to mean split shifts with some early morning and later in the afternoon/evening classes and even an occasional weekend class.
Teachers are hired on the scene rather than from abroad and while business English is important, you will find a wider range of teaching opportunities here than in other countries in the region.
Hiring Season
Language institutes will hire all year, but February tends to be the best time for an effective job search. Demand is high, but competition is strong, so plan at least a week or two before landing a job.
What Schools Provide
Six to twelve month contracts are most common. Average wages at a language school will be between US$700-$1000 per month. While modest, you can live reasonably well on the local economy. If you want to work near the beaches, you’ll find accommodation and the cost of living to be higher. Working in the Central Valley will provide better income and a more manageable cost of living.
What is Expected of You
A bachelor’s degree and TEFL certification is preferred but demand is sufficient that even without a degree (but with a TEFL cert) you will be able to find work.
Appearances are important and you will be expected to dress the part when applying for jobs.
