.
Who wouldn’t want to Teach English in France? Beautiful Paris, wine, cheese, famous food. Wow.
While France is beautiful to the max, the cost of living is high and even a well paid teacher at a language school will have difficulty making ends meet. Outside the major cities, costs come down a bit and you have a better opportunity to live on what you earn.
Formalities
EU citizenship and a bachelor’s degree are required for obtaining legal working papers and a TEFL certificate of over 100 hours is usually preferred by most employers. As in other EU countries, you might find employers away from the major cities who are more flexible about requirements.
Wages and Benefits
An English teacher’s wages will usually range between 1300 to 2000 euros a month and while that seems like a pretty decent wage, the cost of living, especially in Paris is quite high. You’ll have to be careful and count your francs (euros these days). You can find the current exchange rate here: FOREX.
Accommodation is not usually provided by employers. Some will try to help you find something reasonably priced or an apartment-share situation.
Interviews and Hiring Season
Hiring season peaks in January and September, don’t bother in August as everyone is on vacation. Employers will prefer to interview face-to-face and if hired, you can expect to go to work quickly.
Hiring from abroad is unusual.
Business English classes are most common class you would teach and you might want to pick up a Business English certification to help enhance your employment opportunities. As is typical with business English classes, you can expect to run from location to location, work split shifts and even some weekends. To get to your 25 to 30 teaching hours per week, you may find yourself on the go from early until late in the day as you work yourself around your students’ schedules.
Employers typically offer contracts of 10-12 month duration.
