1. Bookmark this page
Save this page in your "Favorites" so you can easily find it again.
2. Read these directions
Read ALL the directions BEFORE you do anything. Read all the way to the bottom of this page THEN go back and start your course.
3. Download the examination and lesson plan project
This is part of the paid course, so you cannot download those course materials. But the next section is the heart of the course and you DO have access to almost all of that.
4. Read these pages and listen to their related podcasts
Read the pages in the Teaching Skills and TEFL Skills pages on the website. You can find these sections on the navigation bar at the top of each page. See below:
Read the Teaching Skills pages first in the order they are placed on the navigation bar - top to bottom. See below:
Then read the TEFL Skills pages in the same order - top to bottom.
Review the downloads on all these pages. For some of the longer downloads, just review for the main ideas.
5. Listen to the podcasts related to each page
Ten of the TEFL Skills and Teaching Skills pages will have a podcast to go with them. You can play the podcasts directly from the PODCASTS PAGE or you may download them and play them on your device. They are simple mp3 files.
Some people find it easier to listen to the podcast related to a webpage FIRST. The podcasts are informal and conversational explanations of the topics. They are typically only 5-6 minutes, though two are 16-18 minutes.
For the Teaching EFL Grammar page, download Fast Track Grammar Review for EFL Teachers (the link does not work as it is part of the paid course) and review areas where you might need help. You will need this ebook to help you with the grammar questions on the examination.
6. Please note:
Consider the materials we offer to be reference materials. You do not need to memorize everything here. It works best to familiarize yourself with the concepts and vocabulary from all the pages and go back to them when you need a more detailed perspective. Get the BIG ideas first and then go back later and get the details.
7. Take the examination and write your lesson plan
Download your examination. No link here as it is part of the paid course. Read the directions carefully. It is an open book test with no deadline, except that you must complete it within the one-year time limit of your course.
Take the examination: refer back to your materials as needed.
Your lesson plan is part of the examination and should be submitted at the same time. The directions for your lesson plan are in the examination. Read those directions carefully.
Below are three example lesson plans. Review them before writing your lesson plan. Use the same format. The example lesson plans are not part of the free course.
These example lesson plans are Word files and will open in a new window.
These examples are all very good but each has a few flaws. Each is a real lesson plan submitted by a student who took this course and did very well.
The examples lesson plans are part of the paid course.
You will notice small errors in these lesson plans. They were written by students and we have left them as submitted.
7. Submit your examination and lesson plan
Note: BEFORE you submit your lesson plan project, please review it with this Ten-Point Lesson Plan Checklist to make sure you have covered everything that is important.
When you have completed your examination and lesson plan project, send them to TEFLbootcamp@Gmail.com
It usually takes 1-3 business days to review your work and send you some feedback. If your work does not meet the required standards, we will tell you what the issue is, how to fix it and ask you to resubmit that part of your work. We will do everything we can to help you learn the material and succeed.
If the review of your work indicates that you have passed your course, your certificate will usually be printed within 2-5 business days after the decision. The hard copy is usually placed in the mail to you within a further 3-5 business days.
9. Submit your details for your certificate
No certificate is provided with the free course.
Note about lesson planning:
This course stresses the use of good teaching methodology and formal lesson planning. While most experienced and well-trained teachers rarely use fully developed lesson plans, there is a reason why we use them here.
Proper lesson planning, using good method, helps you learn how to think through the best way to teach language skills. Once you have gone through the process of writing a few good lessons, you will begin to see the process more clearly and it is that process that will help you become a much more effective teacher.
Be patient with that process, some people get it more quickly than others, but it does come. And you will see the difference it makes in your classroom.
Note for experienced teachers:
At the start, this course can be more difficult for experienced teachers who have never taken a TEFL/TESOL course that involved using proper teaching methodology.
This course requires you to use PPP or ESA methodology and you may need to break some existing habits. But by the time you finish this course, you will have some new and very effective teaching skills.
Be flexible, learn something new, and get your money's worth out of your course.
