How to Teach English to Adults
Teach English to adults by choosing topics, vocabulary and expressions that are relative to situations in their normal daily life. Practice speaking, perform common activities and learn a foreign language with tips from a teacher in this video. Even better, apply this principles to teaching kids and adolescents as well.
These types of lessons are often called contextual lessons, built within the context of the individual student’s life. That context looks for relevance and teaching material that relates to the students life and gives them a REASON to learn the language you are teaching. That reason, builds motivation and motivation is what keeps your students working hard in the classroom and getting some real benefit.
Functions lessons or lessons that are usually defined by terms like “Asking and answering questions about _____” are often the best vehicle for these type classes, whether for adults or children. Asking and answering relevant questions about our daily lives, work, play, school, etc is the essence of what conversation is all about. Using the proper context – as noted above – added into a functions lesson provides great motivation for your students and also creates information that is more likely to be retained by the student after the lesson is done.
Many TEFL / EFL textbooks approach context poorly. There is even one book that has six year olds talking about buying airplane tickets to go on vacation. How often do six year olds talk about that? Never? But talking about buying a new popular toy? Now you have their interest. Asking and answering questions about that toy? Now you really have them hooked!
Understanding context and relevance is one of the hallmarks for a skilled teacher. A TEFL certification course can help you understand context and functions and improve your teaching skills.
