1. Why
Recommend a TEFL Course?
I do this because I like to
help people. So many
people have helped me from
the first time I even
enquired about TEFL - I
couldn't even count them
all. So . . . it is my
duty to say what I have
found and what you might
find useful, when I think I
have found something
exceptional.
2. How would I know what
makes a good TEFL school?
I started my overseas
experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Botswana (89-91), and have been an EFL
teacher by profession since 1992. My wife and I and have taught anywhere from two to six
years each in Korea, Saudi Arabia,
Thailand, and Taiwan.
I have a Master's Degree in Education (M.Ed.)
from the University of
Arizona, a Post Graduate Certificate
in Education (PGCE-TEFL), a TESOL certification, a
TESL Diploma in Business English, and I have trained teachers in
Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.
What's all that alphabet soup
education mean? Just that I've been around a bit in this field so I
have some idea of what you might find helpful in establishing yourself in
a new career. I'm not the world's biggest expert - but I do have
some serious experience and a quality education.

Which TEFL Training School - and Why
If
you are thinking about a TEFL certification school, I
know you are thinking about a serious investment in
time, money, and energy, and about putting your best
foot forward in a new career.
Because I know the situation - I've been through it (EFL
was a major career change for me too!) - I want to tell
you which school I recommend and why.
I
can recommend an excellent TEFL Certification Course.
If
you intend to come to Asia, Thailand
and/or Phuket specifically - I would
like to recommend a TEFL Certification
School just down the road from where I
live.
The
school is in Kamala Beach on Phuket
Island - in Thailand. It's a great
school - and associated with a quality
internationally based meditation center.

I encourage you to

Number one reason I recommend this
school?
They
are straight shooters. They WILL tell
you the truth about the job market, the
school, work permits and anything else
you need to know. They WON'T tell you
what you want to hear - they will tell
you the truth. Kind of rare in the TEFL
school business. The are sincere
about EVERYTHING they do.
Example: The school does not accept
people without degrees as you can't get
legal work here in Thailand without a
degree. Period. If you intend only to
get your certification here and teach in
another country - they will consider
you. But they won't BS you about
getting yourself legal here.
Ask
other schools here and you will find
that they will tell you otherwise. They
will hem and haw and say they "knew"
somebody once who . . . and sometimes,
uh . . . well . . .
you know exactly what I mean.
Anyway, I like the integrity of the
place - and part of the integrity is
because they are associated with a major
meditation retreat here on the island.
One of the instructors is a Buddhism
teacher in addition to his life as a
TEFL teacher - he is not going to lie to
you.

Long story short - I met with the
owner/managers of the school and was
super impressed. Usually small classes
- I think the current class as I write
this has four teacher-trainees - you
will get lots of help.

You don't have to be a Buddhist - the
school is 100% non-denominational -
just quality guys and gals.
THE TEACHER-TRAINER
It
also happens that they have an
extraordinary Teacher-Trainer.
In
fact, this guy is a life-long friend of
mine (you might as well know my bias!).
He's another straight shooter (yeah,
several in one place - so rare!). He's
been teaching EFL overseas since 1992-3.
He's taught in Korea and Thailand, at
universities, language schools, a
resort hotel, tutored - just about done
it all. Master's Degree in education
and a Post Graduate certificate in TEFL.
A
truly rare find. You probably couldn't
find a more patient and helpful trainer
[uh . . . except for me of course - but
I am semi-retired - though I might want
to get involved with this school some
day as it has really captured my
interest - they do things RIGHT].
THE LOCATION
Why
NOT study and perhaps start your career
on a Tropical Island?
You
are starting a new new life - why not do
it right! Really, you can't beat
Phuket as a great place to study - and
perhaps even start your TEFL career.
I retired here. And Kamala Beach
is a great beach - the school is perhaps
500 meters/yards to the sand and water of
the beach. You are only 15 minutes
from the nightlife center of Phuket -
but yet, far enough away to not get too
distracted from your studies.
